Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’, or Sequoiadendron giganteum ‘Glaucum’, is a majestic evergreen conifer that brings a touch of prehistoric grandeur to gardens. This cultivar is known for its striking blue-green foliage, which gives it a silvery appearance, especially in sunlight. The ‘Glaucum’ variety is a slower-growing and more compact form of the giant redwood, making it more suitable for larger gardens than its enormous wild cousins.
Despite its more modest size compared to the species, ‘Glaucum’ still grows into an impressive tree, forming a broad, conical shape that adds structure and year-round interest to the garden. The blue-green needles are arranged in sprays along the branches, creating a soft, feathery texture that contrasts beautifully with other plants.
As it matures, the Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ develops a thick, spongy bark that’s fire-resistant – a nod to its wild relatives in California that can live for thousands of years. While your garden specimen won’t reach the heights of those forest giants, it will still grow into a substantial tree over many years, potentially reaching 20-30 metres in height.
This tree is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to create a focal point or add a sense of permanence to their landscape. It’s also a great option for wildlife gardens, providing shelter for birds and small animals. The Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ is a living link to the Earth’s ancient past, bringing a sense of timelessness and wonder to any garden large enough to accommodate it.
The Giant Redwood ‘Glaucum’ is relatively easy to care for, given the right conditions. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade, with shelter from strong winds. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates occasional deep watering during dry spells. Pruning isn’t necessary unless you’re removing dead or damaged branches. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. This tree is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance option for those with the space to grow it.
