The Giant Redwood ‘Healthy Mammoth One’ – Sequoiadendron giganteum marks the groundbreaking first release in the distinguished Healthy Mammoth series developed by Dutch breeder Cornelius Kools. This pioneering cultivar established the foundation for what would become a remarkable breeding achievement in conifer development.

What sets this variety apart is its classical pyramidal form combined with distinctive blue-green foliage. The needle structure creates a harmonious blend of colors that shifts subtly through the seasons, while maintaining excellent density and year-round appeal. Its robust constitution ensures reliable performance while delivering the majestic presence expected of a giant redwood.

The cultivar exhibits a traditional pyramidal growth pattern that develops into a commanding specimen tree over time. Its balanced proportions and steady growth rate produce a stately presence that commands attention without overwhelming its surroundings, making it suitable for both larger gardens and estate settings.

As the original release in Kools’ breeding programme, this tree set the standard for combining classical redwood characteristics with enhanced garden performance. Its impressive stature and dependable growing habit make it an excellent choice for creating permanent landscape features or establishing grand focal points.

Plant your Giant Redwood ‘Healthy Mammoth One’ – Sequoiadendron giganteum in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. While adaptable to various soil conditions, it performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soils. Regular watering during establishment is important, particularly in dry periods, though mature specimens develop good drought tolerance. The natural pyramidal form requires minimal pruning intervention. Annual spring fertilisation with a balanced feed promotes optimal health. Though fully hardy, young trees benefit from protection against strong winds during establishment.
