Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ – Sequoiadendron giganteum is a fascinating cultivar that brings dramatic architectural interest to gardens. Its distinctly narrow, columnar form is enhanced by an extraordinary growing habit where the leader gracefully nods before continuing its chaotic, ascending journey.

What makes this tree particularly captivating is its long, weeping branches adorned with grey-green foliage that cascade elegantly along the trunk. These extended twigs, longer than those found on the species, create a unique waterfall effect that adds movement and texture to the garden landscape.

The irregular branching pattern that develops as the tree matures creates an almost sculptural appearance, with each specimen developing its own unique character. This unpredictable growth habit, combined with its narrow profile, makes it an outstanding choice for gardens seeking a bold architectural statement.

Plant your Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ – Sequoiadendron giganteum in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Whilst adaptable to most soil types, it prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Due to its unique growth habit, choose a location that allows for its distinctive weeping form to develop naturally.

Water regularly when young, particularly during dry spells, though established trees become quite drought tolerant. Avoid heavy pruning as this can spoil the natural weeping character – only remove damaged or crossing branches if necessary. A yearly feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth.

The tree is fully hardy but may benefit from shelter against strong winds, particularly when young. Staking may be necessary in the early years to support the developing leader, but avoid restricting the natural nodding and weeping habit that makes this cultivar so special. As a general rule, growers will remove the stake or stop supporting the tree at the height they want it to start weeping over at.

Please note: Decorative pots shown are for display purposes only. Your tree will be supplied in a standard plastic nursery pot shown in the other pictures.
