Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ is a real showstopper in UK gardens. This unique conifer is a weeping form of the massive Sequoiadendron giganteum, but don’t worry – it won’t outgrow your garden! While its wild cousins can reach over 100 metres, ‘Pendulum’ typically grows to a more manageable 10-15 metres over many years.

The tree’s most striking feature is its growth habit. Long, weeping branches droop dramatically from a central leader, creating a narrow, columnar shape. This gives the tree a distinctive, almost sculptural appearance that draws the eye in any garden setting. The effect is particularly striking in winter when snow can settle on the drooping branches.

The foliage of ‘Pendulum’ is made up of small, scale-like leaves that are arranged in whorls along the branches. These are a deep blue-green colour, providing year-round interest and a lovely backdrop for other garden plants. As the tree matures, the trunk develops a thick, spongy bark with a rich reddish-brown colour, adding another layer of visual interest.

In UK gardens, Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ serves as a magnificent focal point. Its unusual form makes it a great choice for adding vertical interest without taking up too much ground space. It works well in both formal and informal garden styles, from stately homes to more modern, minimalist designs.

This tree is more than just a pretty face. Its dense growth provides excellent shelter for birds and other wildlife. In larger gardens, it can be used to create natural screens or windbreaks. Despite its exotic appearance, ‘Pendulum’ is surprisingly hardy and can tolerate most conditions found in UK gardens.

While it grows slowly, Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ is a long-lived tree that will become more impressive with each passing year. It’s a true legacy plant – something you can plant now that will continue to bring joy and wonder to future generations.

Whether you’re looking to make a bold statement, add year-round structure, or simply grow something a bit different, Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ is an excellent choice. It’s a tree that never fails to impress, offering a touch of the extraordinary to UK gardens.

Plant Giant Redwood ‘Pendulum’ in full sun to partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly when young, but it’s drought-tolerant once established. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t usually necessary. Protect from strong winds, especially when young. It’s hardy in most UK areas but may need shelter in very cold regions.
