The Japanese Pagoda Tree Styphnolobium japonicum is a stunning deciduous tree that brings a touch of the Far East to UK gardens. Despite its name, this tree is native to China and Korea, but it’s been grown in Japan for centuries. It’s a medium to large tree, typically reaching 10-20 metres in height, with a broad, rounded crown that provides excellent shade.

The Japanese Pagoda Tree is prized for its elegant, pinnate leaves, which are made up of 7-17 small, oval leaflets. These leaves are a bright, fresh green in spring and summer, turning a warm yellow in autumn before falling. The tree’s bark is another attractive feature, starting smooth and olive-green on young trees, then developing an interesting fissured, grey-brown texture as it matures.

One of the most captivating aspects of this tree is its late summer flowering. In August and September, when many other trees have finished blooming, the Japanese Pagoda Tree produces clusters of small, pea-like white flowers. These blossoms are sweetly fragrant and very attractive to bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by slender, yellow-green seed pods that persist into winter, adding interest to the tree’s bare branches.

This tree is well-suited to the UK climate, being hardy and adaptable. It’s tolerant of urban conditions, including pollution and compacted soils, making it a good choice for street plantings or larger urban gardens. The Japanese Pagoda Tree is also relatively drought-tolerant once established, which can be helpful in drier parts of the UK.

The Japanese Pagoda Tree Styphnolobium japonicum is fairly low-maintenance for UK gardens. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Water deeply during dry spells, especially when young. Mulch to retain moisture, but keep it away from the trunk. Pruning isn’t necessary, but remove dead or crossing branches in late winter if needed. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. This hardy tree is generally pest-resistant, though watch for aphids in summer. It’s tolerant of urban conditions and various soil types, making it a versatile choice for larger gardens.
