Taxodium distichum var. imbricarium ‘Nutans’, known as the Swamp Cypress ‘Nutans’, is a graceful deciduous conifer. It’s a variant of the classic Bald Cypress, with a more pendulous habit.
This tree is famed for its feathery, needle-like leaves. They turn a stunning russet-brown in autumn before falling. This creates a beautiful seasonal display in gardens.
‘Nutans’ has a distinct weeping form. Its branches gracefully droop, giving it a soft, flowing silhouette. This makes it a striking focal point in any landscape.
In its native habitats, Swamp Cypress can grow quite tall. However, in UK gardens, it typically reaches a more manageable height of 15-20 metres over many years.
One of its most interesting features is its ability to grow in wet soils. It can even tolerate periodic flooding. This makes it perfect for damp areas in gardens where other trees might struggle.
In winter, its reddish-brown bark stands out. This adds interest to the garden even when the tree is bare.
Caring for Taxodium distichum ‘Nutans’ is relatively easy. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. This tree prefers moist, acidic soils but is adaptable to various conditions. It can even handle wet or occasionally flooded areas. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter if needed, but this tree generally doesn’t require much pruning. Feed annually in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser. ‘Nutans’ is generally pest and disease resistant. However, keep an eye out for spider mites in dry conditions. In colder areas, provide some winter protection for young trees until they’re well-established.
