The Northern White Cedar ‘Yellow Diamond’ is an evergreen conifer that brings year-round golden brilliance to gardens. This exceptional cultivar of Thuja occidentalis stands out with its bright yellow-green foliage that maintains impressive colour throughout all seasons, becoming particularly vibrant during spring growth.

The dense, compact habit makes ‘Yellow Diamond’ perfect for smaller gardens and containers. Its naturally pyramidal shape requires minimal pruning to maintain form, though it responds well to trimming if desired. The foliage consists of flat, scale-like leaves arranged in attractive fan-like sprays, creating a textural interest that catches light beautifully.

In British gardens, this conifer thrives in most conditions but performs best in full sun to partial shade. While tolerant of most soil types, it prefers well-drained, moisture-retentive conditions. Regular watering is essential during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance, though occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells will maintain optimal health.

For best results, plant in a sheltered position away from harsh winds. Apply a thick mulch layer around the base in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds. While naturally resistant to most pests and diseases, monitoring for spider mites during hot, dry periods is recommended. Annual feeding with a balanced fertiliser in early spring supports healthy growth.

‘Yellow Diamond’ makes an excellent choice for creating golden focal points, low hedging, or adding structure to mixed borders. Its moderate growth rate and manageable size make it particularly suitable for modern gardens where space is at a premium.
