Thuja occidentalis ‘Rheingold’ is a distinct cultivar of the eastern arborvitae, known for its unique colouration and growth habits. A slow-growing evergreen conifer that matures into a medium-sized, oval-shaped shrub. Its foliage is an amber-yellow with hints of bronze, deepening to a eye catching, bright richer hue in the colder months.

‘Rheingold’ is notable for its foliage, which is a bright golden-yellow during the warmer months and tends to turn to a coppery or orange hue in colder temperatures, especially in the winter. The foliage is soft and feathery, arranged in a somewhat flattened spray.

It is a dwarf conifer, growing slowly to a size of approximately 3-5 feet tall and equally as wide in a decade. Its growth habit is naturally globe-shaped or rounded, making it a perfect choice for those who prefer plants that require minimal pruning to maintain a particular form.

Cultural Requirements
Like most Thuja, the ‘Rheingold’ prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. However, to maintain its vibrant gold colouration, a sunny location is optimal. It’s reasonably tolerant of both dry and moist conditions, once established, but it’s best to avoid extremely wet sites.

Uses in Landscaping
Its compact size and striking colouration make it an excellent choice for:

  1. Specimen Planting: As a focal point in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
  2. Foundation Plantings: Near buildings or along borders.
  3. Rock Gardens: Given its smaller size and vibrant colour.
  4. Hedges: When planted en masse.

Maintenance
It’s relatively low maintenance. While it doesn’t require regular pruning, occasional shaping can help maintain a neat appearance, especially if a more formal look is desired.

Hardiness
‘Rheingold’ is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters, down to -20C.

Potential Issues
While ‘Rheingold’ is quite hardy, it’s worth noting that like other members of the Thuja family, it can be susceptible to certain pests like spider mites or issues like leaf blight. Regular monitoring and early intervention can help manage these potential problems.
