Thuja occidentalis ‘Sunkist’ is a distinct cultivar of the eastern arborvitae, known for its unique colouration and growth habits. A slow-growing evergreen conifer that matures into a medium-sized, oval-shaped shrub. This particular variety is known for its distinctive foliage and growth characteristics.
‘Sunkist’ is renowned for its bright and eye-catching foliage. The leaves of this cultivar are typically lemon-yellow or golden-yellow in colour, making it stand out in garden landscapes. The vibrant foliage remains a prominent feature throughout the year, making it a popular choice for ornamental purposes.
In terms of growth habits, ‘Sunkist’ generally maintains a compact and conical shape. It is a slow-growing evergreen shrub, which means it won’t rapidly outgrow its designated space in your garden. This compactness makes it suitable for various landscaping applications, such as hedges, borders, or specimen plantings.
Like other Thuja occidentalis varieties, ‘Sunkist’ is relatively low-maintenance and is known for its tolerance to various soil conditions, although it thrives in well-drained soil. It is also hardy and can withstand cold winters, which makes it suitable for gardens in temperate regions.
Cultural Requirements
Like most Thuja, the ‘Rheingold’ prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of soil types. It thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. However, to maintain its vibrant gold colouration, a sunny location is optimal. It’s reasonably tolerant of both dry and moist conditions, once established, but it’s best to avoid extremely wet sites.
Uses in Landscaping
Its compact size and striking colouration make it an excellent choice for:
- Specimen Planting: As a focal point in smaller gardens or mixed borders.
- Foundation Plantings: Near buildings or along borders.
- Rock Gardens: Given its smaller size and vibrant colour.
- Hedges: When planted en masse.
Maintenance
It’s relatively low maintenance. While it doesn’t require regular pruning, occasional shaping can help maintain a neat appearance, especially if a more formal look is desired.
Hardiness
‘Sunkist’ is very hardy and can tolerate cold winters, down to -20C.
Potential Issues
While ‘Sunkist’ is quite hardy, it’s worth noting that like other members of the Thuja family, it can be susceptible to certain pests like spider mites or issues like leaf blight. Regular monitoring and early intervention can help manage these potential problems.
