The White Cedar family has been grown in British gardens since the 16th century, with this modern vibrant ‘Sunkist’ variety becoming a favourite since its introduction in the 1960s.
This splendid conifer brings a dash of sunshine to the garden with its bright, golden-yellow foliage that maintains its colour throughout the year. Unlike some yellow conifers that can look washed out in summer, ‘Sunkist’ holds its rich colour beautifully, creating a striking vertical accent wherever it’s planted.
The soft, feathery foliage forms in flat sprays that layer attractively up the plant. In winter, the foliage takes on subtle orange tints, adding extra warmth to the garden when it’s needed most. The overall effect is cheerful without being gaudy.
‘Sunkist’ grows in a naturally neat, columnar shape that doesn’t need much trimming to stay tidy. It’s a medium-paced grower, adding roughly 15-20cm per year, making it easy to maintain at your desired height.
This conifer is brilliant for British gardens. It’s properly hardy, shrugging off winter cold and summer drought once established. It’s not fussy about soil as long as it’s not waterlogged, and it handles both full sun and partial shade nicely.
You can use ‘Sunkist’ in many ways in the garden. It makes a cracking specimen plant, works beautifully in mixed borders, and creates stunning golden hedges. It’s particularly good for adding vertical interest without taking up much ground space, perfect for smaller gardens.
