Western Red Cedar ‘Whipcord’ is a truly unique evergreen that can bring a touch of whimsy and texture to your garden. This dwarf variety of Thuja plicata stands out with its unusual, thread-like foliage that cascades down in thin, rope-like strands. It’s a slow-growing tree that forms a mound-like shape, making it perfect for gardeners who want an interesting feature that won’t outgrow its space.
‘Whipcord’ typically reaches only about 1-1.5 metres tall and wide over 10 years, growing at a very slow rate. Its small size means it can work well in almost any garden, from tiny urban spaces to rock gardens, mixed borders, or even in a container on a patio or balcony. The dark green, cord-like foliage provides year-round interest, with its unique texture catching the eye in any season.
One of the best things about this tree is how it can add a sense of movement and intrigue to your garden. Its mounding shape and drooping, whipcord-like branches create a natural focal point, drawing the eye and adding interest to your garden design. The unusual foliage creates a sculptural effect that looks good in both modern and traditional garden styles.
Gardeners often choose ‘Whipcord’ for its low-maintenance nature and hardiness. Once established, it’s quite tolerant of different soil types and can cope with urban pollution, making it a good choice for town gardens. It’s also resistant to most pests and diseases, so you won’t need to worry about constant care.
This cedar works well in various garden settings. It can add a touch of year-round interest to rock gardens, serve as a unique specimen in a container, or bring some evergreen texture to mixed borders. You could use it as a standalone feature in a small space, or plant a few to create interesting groupings.
For gardeners looking to add year-round structure and a touch of the unusual to their gardens, Western Red Cedar ‘Whipcord’ is an excellent option. Its attractive foliage, compact form, and easy-care nature make it a valuable addition to any outdoor space, especially for those who want something truly unique.
Caring for Western Red Cedar ‘Whipcord’ is straightforward, which is great news for gardeners. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. It prefers well-drained soil but can adapt to various soil types. Water regularly when it’s first planted to help it establish. Once settled, it’s quite drought-tolerant but will appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells. You don’t need to feed it often – a light application of slow-release fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t necessary to maintain its compact shape, but you can remove any dead or damaged branches if needed. Keep an eye out for any signs of browning or dieback, which could indicate stress. ‘Whipcord’ is very hardy and can cope with winters without extra protection, even in exposed or coastal areas.
