The Small Leaved Lime – Tilia cordata, standing at a majestic 350-400cm in a substantial 45L pot, is a truly impressive native tree that offers instant maturity to any landscape. This spectacular specimen is well-developed, providing immediate impact and grandeur to your garden. Renowned for its charming heart-shaped leaves and sweetly scented, pale yellow flowers blooming in July, the Small Leaved Lime is a magnet for wildlife. The fragrant flowers are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinators, filling the air with a delightful honey scent on warm summer evenings.
This tree is perfect for spacious gardens, parks, or as a centrepiece in a native woodland planting scheme. Its broad, rounded crown offers excellent shade in summer, while the smooth, grey bark provides winter interest. Come autumn, the leaves transform into a beautiful butter-yellow hue before falling, creating a golden carpet beneath. The Small Leaved Lime holds a special place in British folklore and was traditionally planted near churches and in village squares.
As a native species, Tilia cordata is ideally suited to UK conditions and supports a diverse array of wildlife throughout the seasons. It’s an excellent choice for those aiming to boost biodiversity or create a natural, woodland atmosphere. While typically a slow-growing tree, this 350-400cm specimen gives you a significant advantage in achieving a mature landscape.
The generous 45L pot size ensures an extensive, well-developed root system, giving the tree an excellent start when transplanted into your garden. This substantial specimen will provide immediate structure and height, ideal for those seeking a mature look without waiting decades for a tree to establish.
Plant your Small Leaved Lime in a sunny or partially shaded position in moist, well-drained soil. It’s adaptable to most soil types but prefers slightly alkaline conditions. Water regularly for the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant. Pruning is generally not necessary but can be done in late winter if required to maintain shape. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. This hardy tree is generally resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.
