Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ – Tsuga canadensis ‘Fantana’ is a lovely evergreen conifer that brings a touch of grace to UK gardens. This compact variety of the Eastern Hemlock is perfect for smaller spaces or as a focal point in larger gardens. ‘Fantana’ forms a dense, rounded shape with gently arching branches, creating a soft, fountain-like appearance that adds movement and texture to your outdoor space.
The foliage of ‘Fantana’ is made up of small, flat needles in a rich green colour. These needles are arranged in a feathery pattern along the branches, giving the tree a lush, full look. In spring, new growth emerges in a lighter, bright green shade, creating a beautiful contrast with the older foliage.
This slow-growing tree typically reaches a height and spread of about 1.5 to 2 metres over 10 years, making it a manageable size for most gardens. Its compact nature means it won’t overwhelm your space, yet it still provides year-round interest and structure.
‘Fantana’ is well-suited to the UK climate, thriving in partial shade to full sun. It’s a great choice for creating a natural, woodland feel in your garden or for adding a soft backdrop to flowering plants. The dense foliage also makes it an excellent choice for privacy screening or as a windbreak in smaller gardens.
Eastern Hemlock ‘Fantana’ is fairly easy to care for. Plant it in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. While it can tolerate full sun in cooler areas, it prefers partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant but appreciates consistent moisture. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch away from the trunk. ‘Fantana’ doesn’t require regular pruning, but you can lightly shape it in late winter if needed.
