Tsuga canadensis ‘Jeddeloh’, commonly known as Eastern Hemlock ‘Jeddeloh’, is a captivating dwarf conifer that brings a touch of whimsy and architectural interest to gardens. This slow-growing cultivar is prized for its distinctive nest-like form, creating a natural focal point in any landscape setting.

‘Jeddeloh’ typically grows to a height and spread of about 1–1.5 meter over 10 years, maintaining a compact, mounding habit that resembles a bird’s nest. The soft, deep green needles are arranged in flat sprays, giving the plant a lush, feathery texture that contrasts beautifully with other garden elements. New growth emerges in spring with a lighter green colour, adding a fresh dimension to the plant’s appearance.

Unlike the towering forest hemlocks, this dwarf variety is perfectly suited for small gardens, rock gardens, and container plantings. Its compact size and slow growth rate make it an excellent choice for creating miniature landscapes or Japanese-style gardens.

‘Jeddeloh’ thrives in partial shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates, making it a versatile option for various garden locations. Its evergreen nature ensures year-round interest, with its unique form providing structure and texture even in winter. As it matures, the centre of the plant may develop a slight depression, enhancing its nest-like appearance and creating intriguing shadow play.

Whether used as a stand-alone specimen in a rock garden, as part of a conifer collection, or in a mixed border with perennials, Tsuga canadensis ‘Jeddeloh’ offers UK gardeners a low-maintenance, visually striking plant that brings a touch of forest charm to even the smallest garden spaces.
