Acer griseum, commonly known as the Paperbark Maple, is a true garden treasure. This deciduous tree is renowned for its striking, cinnamon-coloured peeling bark and vibrant autumn foliage. Originating from central China, it’s a superb choice for UK gardens, offering year-round interest.
In spring, small green flowers emerge, followed by winged seeds, adding to its charm. The leaves turn a brilliant red and orange in autumn, creating a spectacular display. Acer griseum is ideal for small gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes. It’s a slow-growing species, reaching up to 10 metres in height, making it manageable and appealing for residential gardens.
This tree thrives in well-drained soil and can adapt to full sun or partial shade. Its unique bark and stunning foliage make it a favourite among garden enthusiasts. Planting Acer griseum seeds is a rewarding experience, bringing both beauty and wildlife to your garden.
Natural Germination: Acer griseum seeds naturally require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. This can be achieved by sowing the seeds in autumn, allowing them to overwinter outdoors. The cold winter temperatures naturally stratify the seeds, preparing them for germination in spring as temperatures rise.
Artificial Stratification: To mimic natural conditions, Acer griseum seeds can undergo artificial stratification. This involves mixing the seeds with moist sand or peat and refrigerating them for approximately 90-120 days. This cold treatment simulates winter conditions, breaking the seed dormancy and promoting germination when planted in warmer soil.
