Japanese Maple Acer ‘Aoyagi’ 20/40cm (3L)

‘Aoyagi’ maple comes from Japan, where its name poetically translates to ‘green coral’, perfectly describing its unusual bark colour.

This Japanese maple brings something truly special to British gardens. Unlike typical maples grown for their leaf colour, ‘Aoyagi’ offers a complete package of interest with its matching bright lime green bark and leaves. The bark remains striking all year round, becoming particularly eye-catching once the leaves fall.

In spring and summer, the bright lime green leaves create a luminous canopy that seems to glow in filtered sunlight. When autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into brilliant neon yellow, creating a gorgeous contrast with the green bark beneath.

The winter display is perhaps its most impressive feature. The bare branches show off their unusual green colouring, standing out beautifully against winter skies. It’s particularly striking when planted near coral-bark or yellow-bark maple varieties, creating stunning colour combinations.

This tree grows at a steady pace, typically reaching about 12 feet in 15 years. It forms an upright, architectural shape that works brilliantly in both modern and traditional gardens. It’s perfect for smaller spaces where year-round interest is important.

‘Aoyagi’ thrives in partially shaded spots in British gardens, preferring shelter from harsh winds. It’s ideal for woodland-style gardens, intimate courtyard settings, or as a stunning focal point in mixed borders.
