Acer palmatum ‘Tamukeyama’ also known as Acer palmatum ‘Beni-hagoromo’ is a truly captivating Japanese maple that commands attention with its graceful, weeping form and exquisite foliage. This stunning cultivar showcases deeply dissected, lacy leaves in mesmerising shades of purple-red and burgundy that maintain their intensity throughout spring and summer, creating a dramatic focal point in any garden setting.

The cascading branches of ‘Tamukeyama’ create a naturally mound-forming structure, developing into a beautiful spreading specimen that works wonderfully as a feature plant in borders, oriental-style gardens, or even large containers on patios. Its weeping habit gives it an architectural quality that adds year-round interest, whilst the delicate, finely cut foliage provides an elegant contrast to bolder-leaved plants.

As autumn approaches, this magnificent maple truly comes into its own, transforming into a blazing spectacle of fiery crimson and scarlet tones. The seasonal colour transition is nothing short of breathtaking, making it one of the most rewarding deciduous shrubs for autumn interest. Even after leaf fall, the attractive branching structure continues to provide visual appeal throughout winter months.

This variety is particularly well-suited to smaller gardens where space is at a premium, as its spreading rather than upright growth habit means it develops width without excessive height. It’s an excellent choice for creating a Japanese-inspired garden atmosphere, combining beautifully with ferns, hostas, bamboos, and other shade-loving companions.

Care Guide for British Climate

Position ‘Tamukeyama’ in a sheltered spot protected from harsh winds and late spring frosts, which can damage emerging foliage. Dappled shade or partial shade is ideal, though it tolerates morning sun if kept adequately moist. Avoid deep shade, which may diminish the intensity of leaf colour.

Plant in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Japanese maples prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions and will struggle in chalky or alkaline soils. Mulch annually with leaf mould or well-rotted compost to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the stem.

Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first few years after planting. Container-grown specimens require consistent watering throughout the growing season. Feed sparingly in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for acid-loving plants.

Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when fully dormant. Avoid pruning in spring when sap is rising, as Japanese maples can bleed excessively.

Protect young plants from harsh winter winds with horticultural fleece if necessary, and ensure container-grown specimens don’t become waterlogged during winter months. Once established, ‘Tamukeyama’ is reasonably hardy and requires minimal intervention.
