‘Ariadne’ was developed by the renowned Esveld Nursery in Holland and has become highly sought-after for its remarkable leaf patterns and colour changes.

This striking maple puts on an incredible show throughout the growing season. In spring, the leaves emerge with deep burgundy buds that unfold to reveal intricately patterned foliage. Each leaf displays a beautiful network of bright yellow veining with splashes of red and pink, creating an almost artistic effect.

As summer progresses, the colours mature and deepen, with the yellow tones taking on rich maroon overtones. The overall effect is quite magical, with the leaves appearing to change their display as light moves across them during the day.

‘Ariadne’ grows with an attractive upright habit, typically reaching 8-10 feet in height, making it perfect for smaller gardens or larger borders. Its manageable size means it won’t overwhelm its surroundings while still providing plenty of visual impact.

This maple performs best in filtered light or partial shade, where its delicate leaf colours can develop fully without scorching. It’s ideal for creating focal points in borders or adding height to woodland-style gardens. The changing leaf patterns bring interest from spring through to autumn.

Like most Japanese maples, ‘Ariadne’ appreciates a sheltered position away from harsh winds. It works brilliantly in spots where its intricate leaf patterns can be appreciated up close, such as near garden seating areas or along pathways.
