‘Skeeters Broom’, discovered as a naturally occurring witch’s broom mutation, brings the dramatic impact of red Japanese maples to a more contained, architectural form.

The tree’s distinctive upright, columnar growth habit makes it particularly valuable for smaller gardens or narrow spaces where vertical accent is desired. Its naturally dense branching creates an attractive, compact form that requires minimal pruning to maintain shape.

The foliage emerges in spring in bright red tones, maintaining strong colour through the summer months when many other red varieties fade to bronze-green. The autumn display is particularly impressive as the leaves intensify to deeper red shades.

As a witch’s broom selection, this variety naturally maintains a compact size while displaying the refined characteristics of larger Japanese maples. This makes it perfect for modern gardens where space might be limited but impact is desired.

The dense growth pattern creates excellent textural interest throughout the seasons, while the consistent red colouration provides reliable colour impact from spring through autumn.

‘Skeeters Broom’ is particularly valuable for container growing or creating vertical accents in smaller gardens, combining architectural form with stunning foliage colour in a manageable size.
