Japanese Maple Acer ‘Beni Kagami’ 20/40cm (3L)

‘Beni Kagami’, apparently meaning ‘Red Mirror’ in Japanese, is aptly named for its reflective-like foliage that catches and plays with light throughout the seasons.

This maple is distinguished by its vigorous early growth and graceful weeping habit. Long, pendulous branches cascade dramatically, often reaching nearly to the ground, creating a living curtain of colour. As the tree matures, its growth rate slows, allowing it to develop a more refined form.

The deeply divided leaves are particularly striking, with finely incised lobes that create intricate patterns. In spring, they emerge in vibrant orange-red to purple-red tones, distinguishing themselves from the darker reds of other cultivars. When grown in partial shade, the leaves reveal subtle green undertones that add depth to their colouring.

Through summer, the foliage deepens to an attractive brown-red, providing reliable colour even in warmer months. The autumn display is spectacular, with the leaves transforming into bright crimson before falling.

This is a fairly fast-growing variety that can reach 8 metres in height, though it can be maintained at a smaller size through careful pruning. Its natural cascading form makes it perfect as a focal point in larger gardens or as a statement piece in Japanese-style landscapes.

‘Beni Kagami’ performs well in both sun and partial shade, though some shelter from strong winds will help protect its delicate cascading branches. It’s ideal for creating dramatic silhouettes against walls or over water features.
