Japanese Maple ‘Beni-shichi-henge’ – Acer palmatum is a truly unique mid-sized deciduous tree that delivers an extraordinary display of ever-changing colours throughout the seasons. The cultivar name ‘Beni-shichi-henge’ translates beautifully as “red and changeful,” which perfectly captures the spectacular nature of this highly sought-after Japanese maple. This stunning variety has earned its reputation as one of the most beautiful variegated maples available, making it a prized addition to any garden.
In early spring, ‘Beni-shichi-henge’ emerges with delicate light green inner leaves dramatically framed by magnificent pink margins. This striking variegation creates an almost painterly effect, with each leaf appearing as though it’s been hand-edged in the softest rose tones. The contrast between the fresh green centres and the vibrant pink borders is absolutely breathtaking, signalling the start of this maple’s remarkable seasonal transformation.
As summer arrives, the pink margins gradually fade to an elegant cream colour, creating an entirely new and equally beautiful colour pattern. This creamy-white edging against the deeper green foliage provides a sophisticated, luminous quality that brightens shaded areas and adds wonderful textural interest to mixed borders. The variegation remains bold and eye-catching throughout the warmest months, ensuring your garden maintains its visual appeal when many other plants have finished their spring show.
Come autumn, ‘Beni-shichi-henge’ saves its final act for the season’s finale. The cream margins give way to stunning tones of orange and red, creating a fiery display that rivals any autumn-colouring shrub. The entire canopy becomes a tapestry of warm hues, providing that classic Japanese maple spectacle that makes these trees so beloved by gardeners.
This variety thrives in gardens when given the right conditions. Plant in a sheltered position protected from harsh winds and late frosts, which can damage the delicate new growth and variegated foliage. A spot with dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon protection is ideal, as the variegated leaves can scorch in intense midday sun. The soil should be moist but well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral, and enriched with organic matter. Japanese maples dislike waterlogged conditions, so ensure good drainage, particularly in heavier clay soils.
Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first few years after planting while the root system establishes. A generous mulch of leaf mould or well-rotted compost applied in spring helps retain moisture and provides gentle nutrition. Feed with a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring, avoiding high-nitrogen feeds which can reduce the intensity of the variegation.
Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. If pruning is required, carry out the work in late autumn or winter when the tree is fully dormant to avoid excessive bleeding of sap. This variety naturally develops an attractive, slightly spreading form that requires little intervention to maintain its graceful structure.
