Japanese Maple Acer ‘Bloodgood’ 20/40cm (3L)

‘Bloodgood’ has been gracing British gardens since the 1800s and remains one of the most reliable and popular Japanese maples available.

This maple is prized for its deep purple-red leaves that keep their rich colour throughout summer, without fading to green like many other purple varieties. The leaves emerge in spring with a bright ruby red colour, deepen to purple-red in summer, and put on a spectacular show in autumn with fiery crimson tones.

The tree naturally forms an attractive upright shape, developing into a lovely oval crown over time. Its layered branches create beautiful silhouettes, especially when lit by morning or evening sun. Even in winter, the dark red bark and twigs add structure and interest to the garden.

‘Bloodgood’ is notably tough for a Japanese maple. It handles both sun and partial shade without leaf scorch and copes well with urban conditions. It’s an excellent choice for gardeners who want the beauty of a Japanese maple but worry about sensitivity.

This tree grows at a steady, manageable pace, typically reaching 4-5 metres over 20 years. It works brilliantly as a focal point in lawns, adds height to borders, or creates stunning features in containers. The deep foliage colour makes a perfect backdrop for flowering plants.

Unlike more delicate Japanese maples, ‘Bloodgood’ is quite adaptable. It grows well in most soil types as long as they’re not waterlogged, and once established, it’s surprisingly drought tolerant.
