‘Enkan’ is a remarkable Japanese maple that stands out for its unique narrow-lobed leaves and excellent colour retention.

The distinctive foliage features five long, narrow leaflets that create an elegant, strap-like appearance. These emerge in spring in a rich wine-red colour that, unlike many red maples, holds its depth beautifully through the summer months. Come autumn, the leaves transform into bright, vivid red shades.

This variety has a naturally neat, upright growth habit, reaching just 2 metres in height and 1.5 metres across at maturity. Its compact size and architectural form make it perfect for today’s smaller gardens, where space is at a premium.

Spring brings delicate green flowers, followed by decorative red and green winged fruits in autumn, adding extra seasonal interest. The tree’s slow growth rate means it’s easy to maintain and won’t outgrow its space, making it ideal for containers or intimate garden settings.

‘Enkan’ performs beautifully in partially shaded positions where its deep red foliage can develop without scorching. It’s perfect for creating vertical accent points in borders or as a stunning container specimen on patios and terraces.

This cultivar, developed by the renowned Esveld Nursery, improves on similar varieties like ‘Red Pygmy’ with its superior summer colour retention, ensuring season-long garden impact.
