‘Koto Maru’, originating from a witch’s broom mutation, is a delightful miniature maple that brings refined elegance to any garden setting.
The tree’s most distinctive feature is its unusually small, five-lobed leaves that create a delicate, almost fairy-like appearance. In spring, these emerge in lime green with attractive pink-red margins, creating a fresh, bright display. As summer progresses, the leaves mature to dark green while maintaining their refined appearance.
This variety naturally forms a dense, compact shape, growing slowly to reach approximately 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide over 15 years. Its small stature and naturally rounded form make it perfect for containers, rock gardens, or as a focal point in compact garden spaces.
The slow growth rate and dense branching structure require minimal pruning to maintain shape, making it an excellent low-maintenance choice for busy gardeners. Autumn brings another colour transformation as the leaves turn to warm yellows and oranges.
‘Koto Maru’ performs beautifully in partially shaded positions where its delicate foliage can develop without scorching. Its compact size makes it perfect for creating intimate garden scenes or adding structure to small spaces.
This maple is particularly valued for Japanese-style gardens where its miniature leaves and refined growth habit create an authentic feel, especially when viewed up close.
