‘Momoiro Koyasan’ is a delightful small Japanese maple that brings exceptional seasonal colour interest to gardens of any size.
The show begins in spring when the palmate leaves emerge in stunning peach-pink tones, creating a spectacular early season display. As summer approaches, the foliage transitions through orange-red to a subtle bronze-green, sometimes developing interesting light variegation. Some leaves may take on attractive lemon-gold tones when exposed to sunshine.
This variety maintains a naturally compact, upright habit, reaching approximately 150cm (5ft) in ten years, making it perfect for small gardens or container growing. Its manageable size and slow growth rate mean it needs minimal pruning to maintain its attractive shape.
Spring brings delicate red-purple flowers, followed by decorative winged red fruits, adding extra seasonal interest. The autumn finale is particularly impressive, with the foliage transforming into vibrant orange-red tones.
‘Momoiro Koyasan’ is notably easy to grow and adaptable, thriving in most well-drained soils. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade positions, with sun exposure helping to develop the best leaf colours.
This versatile maple is particularly suited to container growing, making a perfect statement plant for terraces and patios where its changing colours can be appreciated up close.
