‘Patricia’, named after its admirer at Dick van der Maat’s nursery in the Netherlands, is a remarkable maple that combines robust growth with extraordinary seasonal colour changes.
The tree’s large leaves, reminiscent of the popular ‘Osakazuki’, emerge with beautiful bronze-yellow hues in spring, creating a sophisticated early season display. As summer progresses, the foliage transitions to rich orange tones that set it apart from other varieties.
The autumn finale is particularly spectacular, with the leaves transforming into brilliant bright orange colours that create a stunning focal point in the garden. This vibrant display makes it one of the most impressive maples for autumn interest.
This is a relatively fast-growing variety, reaching 8-10 feet in 10 years, making it perfect for creating quick impact in gardens. Its upright growth habit and strong structure make it an excellent choice for specimen planting or as a stunning backdrop in mixed borders.
Unlike many Japanese maples, ‘Patricia’ thrives in full sun positions, where it develops its best colour intensity. This sun tolerance makes it more versatile in garden placement than many other varieties.
First showcased at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in 2013, this variety has quickly become sought after for its combination of vigorous growth, sun tolerance, and exceptional autumn display.
