‘Japanese Sunrise’, believed to be derived from ‘Sango-kaku’ seedlings, brings exceptional stem colour and seasonal interest to the garden.
The tree’s most distinctive feature is its remarkable winter bark, which displays stunning coral-red tones on sun-exposed sides and yellow-orange hues on sheltered areas. This unique characteristic creates a beautiful two-tone effect that varies depending on viewing angle and light conditions.
Spring brings delicate lime-green leaves, often edged with coppery-orange tints that add extra depth to the display. As summer progresses, the foliage deepens to a fresh, vibrant green that provides a perfect backdrop for the colourful stems. Autumn transforms the leaves into a spectacular show of yellows, golds, and reds.
This variety is relatively fast-growing for a Japanese maple, forming a broadly upright habit that can reach around 5 metres in height. Its vigorous growth and strong structure make it an excellent choice for creating quick impact in gardens.
‘Japanese Sunrise’ performs best in full sun, which enhances its remarkable bark colours, particularly during winter months. The contrast between sun and shade sides of the stems creates fascinating visual effects throughout the year.
Discovered by Billy Schwartz in Pennsylvania, this variety has become highly sought after for its unique combination of colourful bark and excellent foliage displays.
