Sugar Maple – Acer saccharum is a large deciduous tree grown for its broad five-lobed green leaves and reliable autumn display of yellow, orange and scarlet. Supplied as a young plant at 40/60cm in a P9T pot, it is an affordable way to establish a long-lived specimen for larger gardens, parkland or rural boundaries. Fully hardy, it performs best in full sun on deep, moist but free-draining soil.

Sugar Maple – Acer saccharum is a large, long-lived deciduous tree best known as the source of maple syrup in North America, and equally valued here for its autumn colour. Supplied as a young plant at 40/60cm in a P9T pot, this is an economical way to establish a specimen tree that will grow with you over the decades, whether planted as a focal point on a lawn, incorporated into a mixed shelter belt or grown on in a nursery bed before final planting.
The leaves are the tree’s main attraction: broad, five-lobed and typically 8–15cm across, mid to deep green through spring and summer, with a smooth, matt finish and gently rounded sinuses between the lobes. As temperatures drop in autumn the foliage turns through buttery yellow and warm orange to deep scarlet, often with several shades present on the same branch. The display tends to be strongest where the tree receives good light and where days are bright and nights cool.
Growth is upright when young, gradually broadening into a rounded or oval crown with age. Bark on young stems is smooth and grey, maturing to a furrowed, plated grey-brown that gives the trunk character in winter. Small greenish-yellow flowers appear in hanging clusters in spring before or with the emerging leaves, followed by paired winged seeds. The species is fully hardy throughout Britain and tolerates exposure once established, though it is happiest with some shelter from drying winds.
Sugar Maple suits larger gardens, parkland planting, estate avenues and rural boundaries where there is room for a full-sized tree. It is not a candidate for small plots or for planting close to buildings and drains.
Care Guide
Plant between autumn and early spring while the young tree is dormant, avoiding waterlogged or frozen ground. Choose a position in full sun or light dappled shade on deep, moist but free-draining soil; slightly acidic to neutral ground gives the best autumn colour, though mildly alkaline soils are tolerated. Dig a planting hole twice the width of the root ball, loosen the base and sides, and set the plant at the same depth it sat in its pot. Firm gently and water in thoroughly.
Stake small whips only if the site is windy, using a short, low stake that allows the stem to flex. Mulch with 5–8cm of leaf mould, composted bark or well-rotted manure in a circle around the base, keeping it clear of the stem, to conserve moisture and suppress grass competition, which young maples dislike.
Water regularly through the first two or three growing seasons, especially during dry spells from May to September, as this species resents prolonged drought. An annual spring feed with a balanced general fertiliser supports steady establishment. Pruning is rarely needed beyond removing dead, damaged or crossing branches; carry this out in late summer or early autumn, never in late winter or early spring when maples bleed sap heavily. Protect young stems from rabbits and deer with a spiral guard or mesh.

5. Reduced Transplant Shock: When it’s time to transplant a tree from a tall pot into the ground, the deeper root system developed in the tall pot can reduce transplant shock. The tree is better equipped to establish itself in its new environment.
