The Maple ‘Red Flamingo’ Tree, botanically known as Acer x conspicuum, is a stunning deciduous tree that adds vibrant colour and visual interest to any garden. Growing to a height of 6-8 metres, this compact tree is perfect for smaller UK gardens, offering a manageable size that won’t overwhelm the space.
The ‘Red Flamingo’ variety is particularly eye-catching, with its large, deeply lobed leaves that emerge in shades of bright red or orange in spring. As the season progresses, the foliage transforms, taking on rich green tones throughout the summer before putting on an exceptional autumnal display of fiery reds, oranges, and yellows.
This Maple tree’s unique colouration and compact habit make it an excellent choice for planting as a specimen tree, in mixed borders, or even in large containers on patios and terraces. Its branching structure is also visually appealing, with a rounded, spreading form that adds graceful architectural interest to the landscape.
In addition to its ornamental appeal, the Maple ‘Red Flamingo’ is a hardy and resilient tree that is well-suited to the UK climate. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, moist soil, making it a versatile option for a variety of garden settings.
The Maple ‘Red Flamingo’ Tree is a relatively low-maintenance plant that requires minimal pruning and care. It’s important to water the tree regularly, especially during the first few years after planting, to ensure the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilising the tree in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser can help promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring, focusing on removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain the tree’s attractive shape and structure.
To protect the Maple ‘Red Flamingo’ from frost damage, it’s recommended to apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. This helps insulate the roots and retain soil moisture.
