Atlas Cedar Trees
Cedrus atlantica
The Atlas Cedar – Cedrus atlantica is a striking evergreen conifer that brings a touch of North African majesty to gardens. Native to the Atlas Mountains, this tree can grow to impressive heights of 30-40 metres, forming a broad pyramidal shape with age. Its branches spread horizontally, creating distinct layers that add architectural interest to any landscape.
The needles are short, rigid, and bluish-green to silvery-blue, depending on the variety, giving the tree a lovely glaucous appearance year-round. In autumn, male cones produce clouds of pollen, while the female cones stand upright on the upper branches, maturing over two years before disintegrating to release their seeds.
The Atlas Cedar is not just visually striking; it’s also quite hardy once established, tolerating drought and various soil conditions. It provides excellent shelter for wildlife and can be a focal point in large gardens or parks. While slow-growing, its longevity means it can become a living legacy, growing more impressive with each passing year.
