The Paper Birch is a striking tree that brings a touch of North American wilderness to UK gardens. This species, Betula papyrifera, is famed for its brilliant white bark and golden autumn foliage, making it a superb choice for gardeners looking to add year-round interest to their outdoor space.

Paper Birch grows at a moderate to fast rate, typically adding about 30-60cm per year. It can reach heights of 15-20 metres over time, with a pyramidal to rounded crown spread of 8-10 metres. This makes it suitable for medium to large gardens, or as a stunning specimen tree in parks and public spaces.

The tree’s standout feature is undoubtedly its bark. Starting as a warm reddish-brown in young trees, it gradually peels to reveal a brilliant white with subtle pink and salmon tones. This provides stunning winter interest when the leaves have fallen. In spring and summer, the tree is clothed in oval, toothed leaves that turn a vibrant golden yellow in autumn, creating a spectacular seasonal display.

Paper Birch is hardier than many might expect. It’s well-adapted to cool climates and can handle both full sun and partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types. It’s also relatively tolerant of urban conditions, making it a good choice for town gardens.

Gardeners love this tree for its versatility and year-round interest. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its white bark will create a focal point. Or plant a small group to create a mini birch grove. It looks fantastic in both modern and naturalistic garden designs, adding a touch of lightness and movement with its gently swaying branches.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Paper Birch supports a variety of wildlife. Its seeds are a valuable food source for birds, and its bark and branches provide habitat for insects and small mammals.

For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching tree that brings year-round interest to their garden, Paper Birch is an excellent choice. Its beautiful bark, graceful form, and seasonal changes add a touch of magic to any garden, creating a focal point that’s sure to impress throughout the year.

Paper Birch is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches. If you need to prune, do it in late summer or early autumn to avoid excessive bleeding of sap.
