Betula pendula ‘Karaca’® is a truly exceptional dwarf weeping birch that brings year-round beauty to gardens of all sizes. This naturally compact variety has been specifically selected for its graceful, cascading habit and extraordinarily fine foliage that sets it apart from traditional birches. The delicately dissected, feathery leaves create an almost fern-like appearance, giving the tree an ethereal quality that moves beautifully in the slightest breeze.

In spring, the tree bursts into life with bright yellow-green foliage that creates a luminous focal point in the garden. The fine, lacy leaves emerge alongside yellow-green catkins in late winter and early spring, adding texture and interest when many other plants are still dormant. As the seasons progress, the foliage deepens to a rich, dark green throughout summer, providing a stunning backdrop for perennials and other garden plants.

Autumn brings another spectacular transformation when the delicate leaves turn brilliant shades of rich yellow, creating a glowing display that rivals any larger tree. The seasonal colour changes make ‘Karaca’® a dynamic presence in the garden, ensuring it never becomes just background planting.

One of the most beloved features of this cultivar is its developing white bark, which becomes increasingly prominent as the tree matures. The characteristic silver-white bark of birches is synonymous with elegance, and ‘Karaca’® delivers this in a perfectly proportioned package. The slender, weeping branches create a graceful silhouette that looks particularly striking in winter when the architectural form is fully revealed.

This dwarf birch is incredibly versatile in garden design. Its compact nature makes it ideal for small gardens where traditional birches would quickly outgrow their space. It works beautifully as a specimen tree in mixed borders, provides structure in cottage gardens, and can even be grown successfully in large containers on patios or terraces. The weeping habit makes it particularly effective when positioned where the cascading branches can be fully appreciated.

Care Guide for British Climate

Plant ‘Karaca’® in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Birches prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil but are adaptable to most conditions. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a strong root system, and continue watering during dry spells, particularly for container-grown specimens.

Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth. Mulch around the base with organic matter to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping the mulch clear of the trunk. Pruning is rarely necessary beyond removing any dead, damaged, or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant.

This variety is fully hardy and requires no winter protection. Watch for aphids in spring and treat if necessary. The compact growth habit means staking is usually only required for the first year or two after planting.
