Calocedrus decurrens ‘Aureovariegata’ is a truly captivating cultivar of the Incense Cedar, offering a unique and eye-catching display throughout the year. This elegant evergreen conifer is characterised by its distinctive, scale-like leaves arranged in flattened sprays, creating a lush, textured appearance.
What sets ‘Aureovariegata’ apart is its stunning variegation, with the foliage featuring a beautiful interplay of deep green and bright golden-yellow hues. This variegation remains consistent throughout the seasons, providing a constant source of colour and interest in the garden. As the tree matures, it develops a narrow, columnar form, making it an excellent choice for vertical accents or as a specimen tree.
The aromatic foliage, when crushed, releases a pleasant, spicy fragrance reminiscent of incense, adding another sensory dimension to its appeal. With its striking appearance and relatively slow growth rate, ‘Aureovariegata’ is an ideal choice for gardeners looking to add a touch of golden elegance to their landscape.
Plant Calocedrus decurrens ‘Aureovariegata’ in well-draining soil in full sun to partial shade. It tolerates a wide range of soil types but prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Water regularly during establishment and in dry periods, ensuring consistent moisture without waterlogging. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in late winter or early spring if needed to maintain shape, but avoid heavy pruning. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth and maintain vibrant variegation.
