Our Redwood Seeds Collection offers a unique opportunity to cultivate three of the world’s most magnificent tree species: Sequoia sempervirens (Coast Redwood), Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia), and Metasequoia glyptostroboides (Dawn Redwood).

Sequoia sempervirens, the Coast Redwood, is famed for its towering height and longevity. Native to the foggy coastal regions of California, this evergreen species thrives in moist, well-drained soils. Its imposing stature and reddish-bark make it a captivating addition to any landscape.

The Giant Sequoia, Sequoiadendron giganteum, is known for its massive trunk diameter. Found in the Sierra Nevada mountains, this species prefers sunny locations with deep, fertile soil. Planting these seeds brings the grandeur of the mountainous American West to your garden.

Lastly, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, the Dawn Redwood, is a deciduous conifer with a rich history. Once believed extinct and only known from fossils, this species was rediscovered in China. It showcases beautiful needle-like leaves that turn copper in the autumn.

This collection allows gardeners to experience the diversity of the Redwood family. Each species, with its unique characteristics, contributes to an awe-inspiring green space. Whether for conservation, education, or aesthetic purposes, these seeds are a gateway to growing living monuments.

Planting these seeds not only adds spectacular beauty to your garden but also connects you with ancient and natural wonders. With proper care, each tree will develop its own distinct personality, contributing to a diverse and thriving ecosystem.

Bonsai Suitable?: Yes. There is no such thing as “Bonsai seeds”. It’s just marketing. Seeds are seeds. There are occasionally strains of some seeds taken from small trees that grow slower and smaller, however Redwood trees do not flower and produce seed under bonsai conditions. Redwoods generally only flower and seed in the wild at about 250 years old.

Giant Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Giant Redwood seeds typically germinate following fire, which clears the ground and exposes the soil to sun, aiding in germination. In a garden setting, mimic these conditions by sowing the seeds in a well-draining, sunny spot, preferably in early spring.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then mix them with moist sand and store them in a refrigerator for 15-30 days. This process mimics the cold, moist conditions of winter. After stratification, plant the seeds in a light, well-draining soil mix, and maintain a consistent temperature of 18-22°C.

Coast Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Coast Redwood seeds typically require exposure to light for germination. In their natural habitat, these seeds germinate following disturbances such as fire that create open, well-lit conditions. Plant the seeds shallowly in a location with ample sunlight, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours to soften the seed coat. Then, place them on a moist paper towel, seal in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for about 30 days. This simulates the natural cold, moist conditions of winter. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and keep them at a temperature of 18-22°C, ensuring they receive plenty of light.

Dawn Redwood Seeds

Natural Germination: Dawn Redwood seeds require a period of cold stratification to germinate, mimicking the winter conditions. Plant the seeds in a moist, well-drained soil mix and expose them to winter temperatures outdoors, or keep them in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse.

Artificial Stratification: For artificial germination, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then place them in moist sand or a damp paper towel. Seal them in a plastic bag and refrigerate for 60-90 days to simulate winter conditions. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of a well-draining soil mix and maintain a temperature of 18-22°C with adequate lighting.
