Looking for a tree that’s a bit out of the ordinary? The Indian Bean Tree, or Catalpa bignonioides, might be just the ticket. This deciduous tree is a real head-turner in UK gardens.
It sports enormous, heart-shaped leaves that create a lush, tropical feel. But the real magic happens in late spring or early summer when the tree bursts into bloom. The flowers are a sight to behold – white, frilly, and orchid-like, with pretty purple and yellow speckles inside. They grow in upright clusters, covering the tree in a blanket of blooms. After the flowers fade, the tree produces long, bean-like seed pods. These hang on well into winter, rattling in the breeze and giving the tree its common name.
The Indian Bean Tree is a fast grower, quickly becoming a sizeable shade tree. It’s tough too, handling urban pollution with ease. This makes it a great choice for both country and city gardens. The tree has been growing in the UK since the 1700s, proving it can handle our climate. It’s ideal for larger spaces where it can reach its full potential. With its big leaves, showy flowers, and quirky seed pods, the Indian Bean Tree offers interest in your garden all year round.
Choose a well-draining location with full sun to partial shade for your Catalpa bignonioides. Ensure that the tree has enough space to grow without crowding other plants.
This tree is adaptable to different soil types but prefers fertile, loamy soil. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogged roots, which can be detrimental to the tree’s health.
Spring or early autumn is the best time to plant Catalpa bignonioides in the UK, allowing it to establish its root system before the onset of extreme weather. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate the roots from temperature extremes.
Prune the tree in late winter or early spring to remove any dead or damaged branches and to maintain its shape. Catalpa bignonioides can be pruned to encourage a more compact growth habit.
Young tree may benefit from staking or support to help them establish an upright growth habit.
While the tree is hardy in the UK, young plants may benefit from protection during severe frosts, especially in the early years. Hardy in all of UK when mature. (-20C to -15C).
