Indian Bean Tree, or Catalpa bignonioides, is a striking deciduous tree that adds a touch of the exotic to British gardens. Despite its name, it’s actually native to the southeastern United States. This tree is known for its large, heart-shaped leaves and showy flowers that bloom in late spring or early summer. The flowers are white with purple and yellow spots inside, growing in large, upright panicles that can reach up to 30 cm long. These blooms are not only beautiful but also fragrant, attracting bees and other pollinators to your garden.

One of the most interesting features of the Indian Bean Tree is its long seed pods, which appear after flowering. These slender, bean-like pods can grow up to 40 cm long and often remain on the tree well into winter, providing interest even after the leaves have fallen. The pods are what give the tree its common name, though they’re not edible.

This tree has a broad, spreading crown that provides excellent shade in summer. Its large leaves turn a lovely yellow colour in autumn before falling, adding to its seasonal appeal. The Indian Bean Tree is a great choice for gardeners looking for a statement tree that offers year-round interest. It’s particularly well-suited to larger gardens or parks where it has room to spread out.

While it can grow quite tall in its native habitat, in British gardens it typically reaches a more manageable height of 10-15 metres. This makes it suitable for many gardens, though it’s best to consider its eventual size when planting. The Indian Bean Tree is relatively fast-growing, so you won’t have to wait too long to enjoy its full beauty.

Indian Bean Tree is fairly easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of various skill levels. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to different soil types. Water regularly during its first few growing seasons to establish a deep root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth. This tree is generally resistant to pests and diseases, adding to its low-maintenance appeal.
