Cercis canadensis – Eastern Redbud ‘Eternal Flame’ is a stunning small tree that brings year-round colour to your garden. The glossy leaves emerge in a brilliant red shade in spring, gradually changing through warm oranges to sunny yellows as the seasons progress. This creates a remarkable graduated effect, as if the tree is constantly putting on a gentle light show.

Before the leaves appear, lovely dark pink flowers cover the bare branches in mid-spring, creating a magical display. These flowers are a favourite with early-season pollinators, bringing life to your garden.

This compact tree is perfect for smaller gardens, where space might be limited. It grows into a naturally attractive shape with multiple stems, meaning you won’t need to spend time training or pruning it into shape.

Originally from North America, this particular variety has been specially chosen for its outstanding colour display and manageable size. It’s a brilliant choice for gardeners who want a tree that offers interest across multiple seasons without becoming overwhelming.

Plant your Eastern Redbud in well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded spot, though it will give the best leaf colour in full sun. While young, water regularly to help establish a strong root system, particularly during dry spells in the first growing season. A layer of mulch around the base will help retain moisture and suppress weeds. This tree is quite low-maintenance once established and doesn’t need regular pruning, though you can remove any damaged or crossing branches in late winter if needed. It’s hardy throughout most of Britain and will cope well with our climate.
