Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Bleu Nantais’, commonly known as Lawson’s cypress ‘Bleu Nantais’, is a captivating conifer that brings a touch of elegance to any garden.
This cultivar is prized for its striking blue-grey foliage that maintains its vibrant colour throughout the year, creating a stunning visual impact in all seasons. ‘Bleu Nantais’ exhibits a compact, conical growth habit, typically reaching heights of 2-3 meters over 10 years, making it an excellent choice for smaller gardens or as a focal point in larger landscapes.
The dense, feathery foliage grows in flat sprays, giving the tree a soft, textured appearance that contrasts beautifully with other plants. This slow-growing evergreen is highly adaptable to various soil types and thrives in the UK climate, offering gardeners a low-maintenance yet visually striking addition to their outdoor spaces. Whether used as a specimen plant, in rock gardens, or as part of an evergreen screen, Lawson’s cypress ‘Bleu Nantais’ adds year-round interest and a touch of blue-tinged magic to any garden design.
Size
Being a dwarf cultivar, ‘Bleu Nantais’ grows relatively slowly and can reach heights of around 2-3 meters after 10 years, under ideal conditions.
Growth Habit
It has a dense and bushy growth habit, making it ideal for providing structure and form in gardens, especially in rock gardens, borders, or as part of mixed plantings.
Care and Requirements
Like other Chamaecyparis lawsoniana varieties, ‘Bleu Nantais’ prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate both full sun and partial shade. It’s important to protect it from harsh winds and excessively wet conditions, as this can damage the plant or lead to fungal issues. Also try to avoid very exposed positions.
Pest and Diseases
While generally robust, it can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases, especially when stressed. It’s essential to watch out for cypress aphids and to monitor for symptoms of diseases like cypress canker.
Soil
Moist but well-drained (will tolerate most soil types)
Pruning
Best pruned in late winter or early spring. First, remove dead/diseased branches. They’re sensitive to heavy pruning and won’t regenerate from old wood so avoid heavy cutting. Maintain natural shape with minimal cuts. Focus on thinning for airflow. Use sharp, sanitised tools to avoid spreading disease.

Fully hardy down to -20C
Ultimate height
0.5–1 metres
