The Lawson Cypress ‘Golden Pot’ is a cracking choice for UK gardeners looking to add a splash of sunshine to their outdoor space. This eye-catching variety of Chamaecyparis lawsoniana stands out with its bright golden-yellow foliage that seems to glow, especially in the winter garden. It’s a brilliant option for those who want to create a colourful focal point or brighten up a shady corner.
‘Golden Pot’ grows into a compact, conical shape, reaching about 2–3 metres tall and 1–1.5 metres wide over time. This smaller size makes it perfect for tiny gardens, patios, or for adding structure to borders without taking over. The dense, feathery foliage creates a soft, textured appearance that’s both cheerful and elegant.
This cypress is a tough little tree, well-suited to the British climate. It’s happy in full sun or partial shade and can handle a range of soil types, as long as they’re well-drained. It’s also quite tolerant of urban conditions, making it a great choice for town gardens.
Gardeners love ‘Golden Pot’ for its versatility. You can use it as a standalone specimen tree, where its golden colour will create a stunning contrast against green or blue-leaved plants. Or plant a few to create a unique, glowing hedge. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of warmth and brightness wherever it’s placed.
Wildlife fans will be chuffed to know that cypresses provide good shelter for birds, especially in winter. The dense foliage offers protection from harsh weather and predators.
Lawson Cypresses have been popular in UK gardens since the mid-19th century, but ‘Golden Pot’ is a more recent variety, selected for its particularly vibrant colouring and compact growth.
For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that brings year-round interest, Lawson Cypress ‘Golden Pot’ is a top choice. Its beautiful golden foliage adds a touch of sunshine to any garden, creating a focal point that’s sure to lift the spirits, even on the greyest of British days. Whether you’re planning a new garden or looking to add some sparkle to an existing one, this cypress could be just the ticket.
Lawson Cypress ‘Golden Pot’ is pretty easy to look after, which is great news for busy UK gardeners. It’s happiest in full sun, where its golden colour will be at its brightest, but it can handle partial shade too. It prefers well-drained soil. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it’s fairly drought-tolerant. You don’t need to feed it much – a light application of general-purpose fertiliser in spring is enough. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but if you want to keep it compact, you can trim it lightly in late spring or early summer.
