The Lawson Cypress ‘Snow White’ is a stunning evergreen conifer that adds a touch of brightness to any UK garden. This cultivar is known for its striking creamy-white foliage, which stands out beautifully against other green plants.
‘Snow White’ has a compact, conical shape that makes it ideal for smaller gardens or as a feature in larger landscapes. It grows slowly, reaching a manageable height of about 2-3 metres over 10 years.
The foliage is made up of soft, scale-like leaves that give the tree a delicate, almost fluffy appearance. The creamy-white colour is most intense on new growth, creating a lovely contrast with the slightly greener inner foliage.
This tree is quite hardy and well-suited to the UK climate. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soil. Once established, it’s relatively drought-tolerant, making it a low-maintenance option for busy gardeners.
‘Snow White’ requires little pruning to maintain its natural shape. It’s also resistant to many pests and diseases, further reducing the care it needs.
In winter, when many other plants have lost their leaves, ‘Snow White’ continues to provide interest with its bright foliage. It can bring a touch of light to darker corners of the garden.
This cultivar is excellent for creating year-round structure in the garden. It works well as a standalone specimen, in mixed borders, or even in large containers on patios.
The Lawson Cypress has been popular in UK gardens since the 19th century. By choosing the ‘Snow White’ variety, you’re adding a modern twist to this classic garden tree, bringing both tradition and uniqueness to your outdoor space.
Lawson Cypress ‘Snow White’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
