Lawsons Cypress ‘Filip’s Golden Sprinklers’ 80/100cm (10L)

The Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Filip’s Golden Sprinklers’ brings year-round sunshine to British gardens with its brilliant golden-yellow foliage. This exceptional cultivar develops thread-like foliage that cascades in graceful sprays, creating a fountain-like effect that inspired its descriptive name. The bright golden colour remains vibrant throughout the seasons, providing cheerful contrast against darker evergreens or winter skies. Young growth emerges particularly bright, almost luminous in spring sunshine. The tree forms a neat, pyramidal shape that requires minimal pruning to maintain.

This golden cypress reaches 3-4 metres in height with a spread of 1.5-2 metres, making it perfect for smaller gardens. The compact size and striking colour make it an ideal focal point for mixed borders or as a specimen in lawns. The dense, feathery foliage creates excellent texture and works brilliantly in winter gardens where its golden tones shine against frost or snow. Unlike some golden conifers, ‘Filip’s Golden Sprinklers’ holds its colour well even in partial shade, though full sun produces the brightest tones.

The tree proves remarkably adaptable to British conditions, tolerating coastal exposure and urban pollution with ease. It thrives in most well-drained soils, from acid to slightly alkaline. Once established, it shows good drought tolerance, though regular watering during dry spells keeps the foliage looking its best. This cultivar suits contemporary and traditional gardens alike, bringing structure and year-round colour without overwhelming smaller spaces. Wildlife appreciates the dense shelter it provides, making it both beautiful and beneficial.

Plant ‘Filip’s Golden Sprinklers’ in autumn or spring in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Choose a position with full sun to partial shade, protecting from harsh winds while young. Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, water only during extended dry periods. The golden foliage may scorch in extreme heat without adequate moisture. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to maintain vigorous growth and colour. Light pruning in late spring helps maintain shape, though the natural form rarely needs intervention. Remove any reverted green shoots immediately to preserve the golden colouring. Mulch annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. This cultivar shows good resistance to common Lawson cypress problems when grown in open, airy conditions.
