Lawson’s Cypress Seeds

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana

Price range: £2.12 through £3.20

Lawson’s Cypress – Chamaecyparis lawsoniana seeds. This graceful evergreen is often overlooked and mistaken for Leyland cypress, but it has softer, flattened foliage sprays and a scent all its own. Because they’re species seeds, every seedling varies slightly in colour and habit.

Lawson’s Cypress – Chamaecyparis lawsoniana often gets overlooked, and people regularly mix it up with its far more familiar relative, Leyland cypress – Cupressus × leylandii. The two are quite different trees. Lawson’s has soft, flattened sprays of foliage with a faint resinous, parsley-like scent when crushed, and fine pale markings on the undersides of the leaves. It’s native to a narrow coastal strip of Oregon and northern California, and the Lawson & Son nursery in Edinburgh brought it into cultivation in 1854.

Growing it from seed is a good way to get to know this conifer properly. These are species seeds, so each seedling turns out a little different: some greener, some bluer, some more upright. It’s very satisfying to watch the first tiny, feathery shoots fill out into a proper young tree, whether you want a hedge, a specimen tree or a bonsai.

Season of Interest

Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter

Natural Germination:Sow the seed outdoors in autumn or early winter, in a prepared seed bed or in pots of gritty seed compost kept in a cold frame or a sheltered spot. Winter cold and damp do the stratifying for you. Sow about 3mm deep, firm the compost gently over the seed, then cover with a thin mulch of fine grit to hold moisture in and stop the seed being washed out. Keep the compost evenly moist but never waterlogged through winter and into spring, and germination should follow as temperatures rise. Give the seedlings bright light without harsh midday sun, and shelter them from drying winds while they’re young.

Artificial Stratification:Pretreatment is recommended for reliable spring germination. Start by soaking the seed in water for 24 hours; scarification isn’t needed. Drain the seed, mix it with slightly damp vermiculite, sand or peat-free compost, and seal it in a labelled bag. Cold moist stratify in the fridge at about 1-5°C for 60 days, checking now and then that the mix hasn’t dried out or gone mouldy. Warm stratification isn’t required. After chilling, sow 3mm deep in free-draining seed compost, firm lightly, top with a thin layer of fine grit and keep evenly moist in good light at around 15-20°C until the seedlings appear.
