Chamaecyparis obtusa is commonly referred to as the Hinoki cypress or Japanese cypress, native to Japan. Among its many cultivars, ‘Nana Lutea’ and ‘Nana Gracilis’ are both very distinctive ones.

🌿 ‘Nana Lutea’ is particularly admired for its golden-yellow foliage

🌿 ‘Nana Gracilis’ is known for its bright and deep green foliage.

Both of which tend to become more vibrant with exposure to full sun. The leaves are scale-like and tend to arrange themselves in fan-like sprays, giving the plant a dense, textured appearance.

Being dwarf cultivars, ‘Nana Lutea’ and ‘Nana Gracilis’ grow slowly and maintain a compact size. They typically form a rounded, almost globe-like shape over time. Given many years, they can achieve a height of several feet, but their growth rate is such that they remains manageably small for a long time.

Like other Chamaecyparis obtusa varieties, they prefers well-drained soil. They can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they don’t retain excessive moisture. While they can thrive in full sun, which maximizes their deep hues, they also do well in partial shade.

Thanks to their stunning deep colours and compact forms, Nana Lutea’ and ‘Nana Gracilis’ are favourites for accentuating rock gardens, borders, or even as a stand-alone specimens in a pot or container. They are also used in mixed plantings to provide a colour contrast with other plants.

Generally low-maintenance, these cultivars rarely require pruning due to their slow growth rate. Regular watering is essential during their early years and in prolonged dry spells, but it’s essential not to let the plants sit in soggy soil.

Plant ‘Nana Lutea’ in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Water regularly when young, especially during dry spells. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant. Minimal pruning required; trim lightly in late spring if needed to maintain shape. Protect from harsh winds and winter sun to prevent foliage burn.

Chamaecyparis obtusa Nana Lutea’ and ‘Nana Gracilis’ are very hardy and can withstand cold temperatures down to -20C.
