Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’, or Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Aurea’, is a stunning dwarf conifer that adds a touch of golden charm to any garden. This slow-growing evergreen is prized for its compact, globe-shaped form and bright yellow-green foliage. The ‘Nana Aurea’ variety is a smaller version of the classic Hinoki Cypress, making it perfect for smaller gardens or as a focal point in rockeries and containers.

Gardeners love this tree for its low maintenance needs and year-round interest. The golden foliage brightens up shady corners and provides a lovely contrast against other green plants. As it matures, the Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’ develops a slightly irregular shape, adding character to your garden design.

This conifer is well-suited to the British climate, thriving in most soil types as long as they’re well-drained. It’s a great choice for gardeners looking to add structure and colour to their outdoor spaces without the need for constant pruning or care.

The Hinoki Cypress has its roots in Japan, where it’s considered sacred and often found in temple gardens. However, you don’t need a temple to enjoy this beautiful tree – it’ll bring a sense of tranquillity and Eastern elegance to any garden setting.

Hinoki Cypress ‘Nana Aurea’ is relatively easy to care for, making it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade for the best foliage colour. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate most soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This cypress is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
