Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Tempelhof’ is a cultivar of Hinoki cypress, a coniferous evergreen tree native to Japan. Among the many cultivars of the Hinoki Cypress, ‘Tempelhof’ is a very distinctive one.

Hinoki Cypress ‘Tempelhof’ represents a cultivated variation that retains the Hinoki Cypress’s iconic yellow-green branches while adopting a compact, pointed dome-like structure as it matures. The rich, evergreen foliage of ‘Tempelhof’ emerges with a cheerful yellow hue, taking on a cup-like form that matures into a deeper yellow-green over time. During the winter months, a subtle bronzy-brown hue delicately graces the foliage edges. This shrub is an excellent choice for adding vertical interest to mixed borders and rock gardens, lending a touch of sophistication to your outdoor spaces.

Thanks to its stunning golden green and compact form, ‘Tempelhof’ is a favourite for accentuating rock gardens, borders, or even as a stand-alone specimen in a pot or container. It’s also used in mixed plantings to provide a colour contrast with other plants.

‘Tempelhof’ is relatively easy to care for, making it ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners. Plant it in a spot that receives full sun to partial shade for the best foliage colour. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but will tolerate most soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to establish a deep root system, then reduce watering as it matures. This cypress is drought-tolerant once established. Pruning isn’t necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain its shape if desired. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to promote healthy growth.
