Sawara Cypress ‘Boulevard’ – Chamaecyparis pisifera is prized for its distinctive blue-grey foliage, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add year-round colour and unique texture to their outdoor space.

‘Boulevard’ grows at a slow to moderate rate, typically adding about 15-20cm per year. It can reach heights of 3–4 metres over time, with a broadly pyramidal to conical shape that adds structure and vertical interest to the garden. This compact form makes it ideal for medium-sized gardens, as a specimen plant, or as a stunning addition to mixed borders and larger container plantings.

The standout feature is undoubtedly its foliage. Soft, feathery leaves display a beautiful silvery blue-grey colour that holds well throughout the year. This cool hue creates a striking contrast against other green plants and provides a calming, almost ethereal presence. The foliage takes on a slightly purple tinge in winter, adding further interest during the colder months.

‘Boulevard’ is hardier than its delicate appearance might suggest. It’s well-adapted to the British climate and can handle both full sun and partial shade, although it develops the best colour in full sun. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types. Furthermore, it’s also relatively tolerant of urban conditions, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.

Gardeners love this conifer for its unique colour and texture. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its silvery-blue foliage will create a focal point. Or plant it in groups to create a soft, cool-toned backdrop for other plants. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of year-round sophistication and elegance.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate that the dense growth of ‘Boulevard’ can provide good shelter for small birds and insects, especially in winter. The compact form offers protection from harsh weather and predators.

For gardeners after a low-maintenance, eye-catching evergreen that brings year-round colour to their garden, Sawara Cypress ‘Boulevard’ is an excellent choice. Its beautiful silvery-blue foliage and elegant form add a touch of refinement to any garden, creating an attractive focal point that’s sure to impress throughout the seasons.

This cultivar is relatively easy to care for. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but adapts well to various soil types. Water regularly during the first growing season to help it establish, then maintain consistent moisture whilst tolerating short periods of drought. A slow-release, balanced fertiliser applied in spring is optional, as it generally requires minimal feeding. Pruning is rarely necessary unless you wish to maintain a specific shape or size; if needed, prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
