Swamp Cypress – Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer whose soft, feathery green needles turn foxy-orange and copper in autumn before falling. Almost alone among large trees, it thrives in ground that is permanently damp or seasonally flooded, which makes it ideal for pond margins and heavy, wet soil. Supplied at 60/80cm in a P9 pot, hardy, wind-firm and largely trouble-free.

Swamp Cypress – Taxodium distichum is a deciduous conifer from the river swamps and floodplains of the south-eastern United States, valued in gardens for its feathery foliage, tolerance of wet ground and reliable autumn colour. Supplied at 60/80cm in a P9 pot, this young plant is a handy size for quick establishment, for planting in groups along a pond edge, or for growing on for a year or two before it takes up its final position.
The foliage is one of its most appealing features. Soft, flattened needles around 1/2cm long are arranged in two neat ranks along slender shoots, emerging a fresh yellow-green in spring and deepening to mid green through summer. In autumn the whole canopy turns foxy-orange, rust and copper-brown before the shoots fall complete with their needles, leaving a bare, upright framework that shows off the fibrous, reddish-brown bark and the buttressed base older trees develop. Young specimens form a narrow, conical outline that broadens slowly with age, so the tree stays comparatively slim for many years.
Swamp Cypress is one of the very few large trees that thrives in soil which is permanently damp or even seasonally flooded. Planted beside water it may, in time, produce the curious woody “knees” that rise from the roots, though these are far more common in warm, waterlogged conditions. Despite its swamp origins it is entirely happy in ordinary garden soil that does not dry out badly, and it is fully hardy, wind-firm and unusually resistant to pests and diseases. It offers good wildlife value too, with dense summer cover for nesting birds and a light, shifting shade beneath the branches that suits underplanting with ferns, hostas and primulas.
Care Guide
Plant between autumn and early spring while the tree is dormant, choosing a site in full sun or very light shade with shelter from the harshest easterly winds. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball but no deeper, loosen the sides, and set the plant at the same depth it sat in its pot. Damp, heavy clay, pond margins and low-lying ground that other trees dislike are all suitable; avoid thin chalk and very dry, free-draining sand, and note that strongly alkaline soils can cause yellowing of the foliage.
Water generously through the first two or three British summers, especially during dry spells, as young plants resent drought far more than wet feet. Each spring, lay a 5/8cm mulch of bark or leaf mould around the base, keeping it clear of the trunk, to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feeding is rarely necessary, but a general-purpose granular fertiliser applied in early spring will help growth on poor ground.
Pruning is best kept to a minimum. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing shoots in late winter and, if a single clean leader is wanted, reduce competing stems while the tree is young. Stake newly planted trees for the first two seasons on exposed sites.

Cost-Effectiveness
While the initial purchase price of cell grown trees may be slightly higher than bare-root stock for some species, the long-term savings achieved by reducing the need for replacing failed transplants than compensates for the initial minor cost difference.
No plastic waste
Trees are often supplied plastic pots that are difficult to recycle, especially the black pots. We rely on our customers to reuse these where possible, however these cell grown trees do not have plastic pots – saving any reuse & recycling concerns.

With regret, we can no longer send items out to Northern Ireland. All live plants need a phytosanitary checks and DAERA must be notified. This process is simply too expensive at the moment.
