This cultivar of Chamaecyparis pisifera is renowned for its vibrant yellow foliage, making it an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add year-round brightness and texture to their outdoor space.

‘Sungold’ grows at a slow to moderate rate, typically adding about 10-15cm per year. It can reach heights of 1-1.5 metres over time, with a compact, mounding shape that spreads wider than it grows tall. This diminutive form makes it ideal for small gardens, rock gardens, or as a colourful addition to mixed borders and container plantings.

The tree’s standout feature is undoubtedly its foliage. The fine, thread-like leaves are a brilliant golden-yellow colour that holds well throughout the year, becoming even more intense in winter. This creates a striking contrast against other green plants and adds a sunny glow to the garden even on the greyest days.

‘Sungold’ is hardier than its delicate appearance might suggest. It’s well-adapted to the UK climate and can handle both full sun and partial shade, although it develops the best colour in full sun. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil but is adaptable to various soil types. It’s also relatively tolerant of urban conditions, making it a versatile choice for many garden settings.

Gardeners love this conifer for its unique colour and texture. You can use it as a stunning specimen plant, where its golden foliage will create a focal point. Or plant several to create a low, colourful hedge or ground cover. It looks fantastic in both modern and traditional garden designs, adding a touch of year-round warmth and elegance.

Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate that the dense growth of ‘Sungold’ can provide good shelter for small birds and insects, especially in winter. The compact form offers protection from harsh weather and predators.

Sawara Cypress ‘Sungold’ is relatively easy to care for, which is good news for UK gardeners. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, slightly acidic soil, but it’s adaptable to various soil types. When you first plant it, water regularly for the first growing season to help it establish. After that, it appreciates consistent moisture but can tolerate short periods of drought. Feed it with a slow-release, balanced fertiliser in spring if desired, but it generally doesn’t require much feeding. Pruning isn’t usually necessary unless you want to maintain a specific shape or size. If you need to prune, do it in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.
