Cornus sericea – Golden-Twig Dogwood is a brilliant shrub that really comes alive in winter. Its stems shine with a warm, golden-yellow colour that lights up the garden during the darker months. In spring and summer, it’s covered with fresh green leaves that turn lovely shades of red and purple in autumn. Small white flowers appear in late spring, followed by white berries that birds love. Growing to about 2-3 metres tall and wide, it’s perfect for adding life to winter borders or creating colourful hedging. The stems look amazing when planted next to red-stemmed dogwoods, making stunning winter combinations. It’s particularly eye-catching when planted where the low winter sun can shine through the stems. This shrub grows quite quickly, so you won’t have to wait long to see results. If you’re looking for something to brighten up your garden in winter, this dogwood is a great choice.

Golden-Twig Dogwood is very easy to grow in British gardens. It’s happy in most soils but does best in damp conditions, making it perfect near ponds or in boggy areas. Plant in full sun or partial shade – the stems will be more colourful in sunny spots. To keep the bright stem colour, cut it right back to about 15cm from the ground in early spring every two or three years. This encourages lots of new growth with the brightest colour. Mulch yearly with compost to keep the soil moist and feed the plant. It’s very hardy and will bounce back even after hard pruning.
