Japanese Red Cedar ‘Elegans’, or Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’, is a charming conifer that brings a touch of elegance to any garden. This slow-growing evergreen is known for its soft, feathery foliage that changes colour throughout the year. In spring and summer, the needles are a lovely blue-green, turning to a striking bronze-purple in autumn and winter. This colour change adds year-round interest to your garden.

The ‘Elegans’ variety is more compact than the species tree, making it suitable for smaller gardens. It has a naturally conical shape that requires little pruning to maintain, perfect for busy gardeners. As it matures, it develops a slightly irregular form, adding character to your outdoor space.

This tree is a great choice for creating focal points in gardens or for use in mixed borders. Its soft texture contrasts beautifully with other plants, and its changing colours can be the highlight of your winter garden. The Japanese Red Cedar ‘Elegans’ is also an excellent choice for wildlife gardens, providing shelter for birds and small animals.

While native to Japan, this tree adapts well to British conditions. It’s tolerant of most soil types and can handle both sun and partial shade. Its resilience and beauty make it a favourite among gardeners looking to add a bit of exotic flair to their outdoor spaces.

Cryptomeria japonica in general is native to Japan and is an evergreen conifer. The ‘Elegans’ cultivar is just one of many cultivars of this species available.

‘Elegans’ is relatively easy to care for, making it suitable for gardeners of all levels. Plant it in a spot that gets full sun to partial shade. It prefers moist, well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types. Water regularly during its first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it’s quite drought-tolerant. Fertilise in spring with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to promote healthy growth. Pruning isn’t usually necessary, but you can lightly trim in late winter or early spring to maintain shape if desired. Protect young plants from strong winds, especially in colder areas.
