‘Sekkan-sugi’ is a cultivar of the Japanese Red Cedar, also known as Sugi or Japanese Cedar. Its distinctive foliage displays a golden or yellowish-green colouration, with the name “Sekkan-sugi” translating to “Snow Crown Cedar” — a reference to the snowy appearance created by its striking golden foliage. The tree typically grows in a pyramidal or conical shape, reaching heights of 20 to 30 meters (65 to 98 feet) when mature.
The most remarkable feature of ‘Sekkan-sugi’ is its foliage. The needles are scale-like, arranged in flattened sprays, and the golden or yellowish-green colouration is particularly prominent in the new growth during the spring and summer months. As autumn approaches, the foliage may turn bronze or copper before transitioning to a reddish-brown hue in the winter.
Japanese Red Cedar ‘Sekkan-sugi’ is a hardy tree that thrives in well-drained soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is relatively low-maintenance, making it a popular choice for gardens. Regular watering and occasional pruning to maintain its shape and size are typically sufficient for its care.
‘Sekkan-sugi’ is often used as an ornamental tree in gardens due to its striking and unusual foliage. It can serve as a focal point, specimen tree, or be planted in rows for screening and privacy purposes. Its unique appearance makes it a standout addition to any garden design.
